A young man came to our house the other day trying to sell us a subscription to the Post Falls Press. He gave us a free sample issue with a couple sections. The front page of the paper, dating Monday, February 9, 2009, was an article called “Guiding Light.” It was written by AP writer Hillel Italie on the Lincoln Bicentennial. Here is the first paragraph excerpted from The Daily Journal:

Two hundred years after the birth of Abraham Lincoln, we still seek him in words and in action, in lessons from his life, in reminders of his legend - and in pilgrimages to the temple built in his honor.

Funny thing though, our hometown paper seemed to have edited the article a bit. That is, I assume it was edited locally because I can’t find this version anywhere online. From the Post Falls Press:

Two score after the birth of Abraham Lincoln, we still seek him in words and in action, in lessons from his life, in reminders of his legend - and in pilgrimages to the temple built in his honor.

Now, as witty as “Two score” sounds, doesn’t whoever wrote that know that a “score” is only 20 years? So unless Honest Abe was born in 1969, someone’s math is off.

I won’t be buying a subscription.

The local food movement has been all about buying seasonal food from nearby farmers. Now, thanks to the Web, it is expanding to include far-away farmers too.

A new start-up, Foodzie, is an online farmers market where small, artisan food producers and growers can sell their products. Foodies in Florida, say, can order raw, handcrafted pepperjack cheese from Traver, Calif., or organic, fair-trade coffee truffles from Boulder, Colo.

What a great idea! And why not take it one step further? Farmers could band together and form large organizations–call them “corporations”–to grow and distribute mass quantities of food. Retail operations could be set up in every town; they would be sort of super farmers markets, or “supermarkets” for short. Soon everyone everywhere would be able to buy local food from all over the world!

I’ve been reading stories lately about the UN getting all up in arms about asteroids falling from the sky and killing us all. As far as I can tell, that’s great. They have decided that being relevant through global warming isn’t going to work so they are changing threats.

Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to prevent an asteroid strike, at least anything that affects my wallet. There are no asteroid credits to be purchased or asteroid independent cars to buy. There’s really nothing for the government to regulate. This is a global crisis that I am willing to get on board with.

On the one hand, nothing about my life will change. On the other hand, the governments of the world will build sophisticated space lasers…which are definitely a plus for my life…somehow…
